A few days ago James and I went to Mary Mac's in Atlanta to celebrate my sister's birthday. It was pure southern home cooking! They had a special for first time visitors called pot likker. It was a mixture of collard green juice and chicken broth. It was served with a side of corn bread to dip in it. It was so good I might try to make it. I meant to snap a pic of it, but it was so good I forgot. Mary Mac's was founded at the end of the depression. It was one of many small restaurants that popped up all over Atlanta. They claim to still snap their own green beans every morning. When you sit down you have a menu and an ordering card in front of you. You choose what you want, then write it down. It was very cool. I recommend this place if your looking to try something new.

oooh, we recently went there for the first time too, (well Rob had been there before, but not the rest of us) Right before going to the Fox. We all enjoyed the pot likker too. Even the kiddos.
Well…perhaps I will have to leave my safe and bucolic surroundings and venture into the city to visit this fine establishment. After all, I am a true southern gentleman and I cannot deny the quality of good, down-home cooking. I still love pan-fried chicken and authentic cornbread spears cooked just right: Golden in the center and crispy brown at the edges.
But, admittedly, I’m a little nervous about the Pot “Likker”. Partly because I always hated the smell of greens boiling all day and mostly because my last experience that involved the words “pot” and “likker” turned out to be a very rough night.
That is one of my FAVORITE restaurants! When I lived in ATL I used to visit frequently but now that I am in the burbs, not as much. It hs such great character there. You feel like each of the waitresses is your grandmother or something. Also, the antiques in there are beautiful! It's a great Southern place for sure!
