Quiet Sickness

I went shopping with my friend Christy the other day. She lives in a rual area and we took back roads to the shopping center. On one of the roads she pointed out this sign that she sees all the time and is always creeped out by it and for good reason. It's not near a hospital. It's just a quiet back road with some mobile homes and houses. Do they want you to put your car in neutral and coast down the road? I mean how sick do you have to be to have a government issued road sign like this on the road you live on? We should have rolled our window down and yelled "YOU'RE SICK!" This sign being out there is just so creepy to me I don't know why. If anyone reading this knows anything about signs like this please share. I'm very curious about it and wish I knew more. Actually I feel pretty bad for whoever is that bad off.

Bizarre! I have never seen a sign like that. Hmmmm...I wonder if you can have your own sign made? Mine would probably have something to do with pms. ;)

Very Odd. Google it. I'm sure there will be something about it out on the web.

Do you happen to live around the Cleavland TN, or Chattanooga TN area? I saw the sam sign that looks like its in the same area on the pic and what you discribed. I have also wondered what it means.

I just saw that sign in Chatsworth, outside of Atlanta, too! It was out in the middle of nowhere, no hospital around or anything. Just some houses, trailers, etc. STRANGE sign!

The signs have been around for quite a long time. As long as road signs have been in use in fact. I have seen old news paper articles from the 20's discussing these very signs. The definition of the purpose is "A system of warning the public against making excessive noises in the vicinity of homes where people who are critically ill are confined". In the old days when an area was declared a quiet zone it was necessary to "stretch ropes about the place and put of make shift warning signs".

I live in Dalton, Ga and while driving on a back road not to far from one of the high schools here, I noticed a sign just like this. Being VERY new to this area, having moved here from Arizona, i have never seen anything like this! after looking it up on Google, I still have yet to know what the sign truly means, there are NO hospitals close by and doesn't appear to be any nursing homes or etc. The sign is located in a peaceful little neighborhood, just peaceful enough that the sign looks extremely out-of-place and very creepy!!!

Just saw one last night while on vacation. I think it was off 136 in the forest. I read that these signs were originally for men afflicted with Black Lung Disease. They would sleep on their front porches during the summer nights just so they could breathe easier, and this was meant for people to be extremely quiet whilst passing through.

There is one in Griffin Ga. On birdie rd as well. I had no clue what it meant. Nor even seen one in my 44yrs. Kinda gives ya creepy feeling seeing it in the middle of the night

I just saw the same sign I’m weirded out by it but I think it may can mean someone that’s autistic lives near by because they typically don’t like loud noises! Idk

Yes

It’s simply a sign asking passersby’s to not be excessively loud; stereos, exhaust, yelling, etc. The story goes in the old days of harsh working conditions such as factories or mines, workers developed brown lung disease and couldn’t sleep laying down as they felt like they were drowning. And because the climate is hot in those areas, they would resort to sleeping in a recliner on their porch thus putting a sign out asking one’s passing by to be quiet so they could sleep. Not sure if that’s just a legend or actual fact but the meaning of the sign is the same.
